| Behind the Scenes: Men of Valor™ |
The incredible atmosphere of the Vietnam War lends itself to a superior game experience. The weapons, music, and slang of the period still resonate within American pop culture.
How was 2015 able to get Sean Astin to lend his voice to the game?
Sean Astin was cast later in the project after the enormous success of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Initially hesitant, Astin agreed after reading character biographies and design documents giving him a better perception of the game. Astin is a huge Vietnam buff, and his interest in the topic started when he was young and filming "The Goonies". Astin's driver on that picture was a Vietnam vet, and would tell the actors his personal war stories as he drove Astin to the set each day. In 1988, Astin directed "On My Honor", a short film on the Vietnam War that was in part inspired by the stories he heard when he was young. Upon meeting the 2015, Astin sat down and discussed his game character, and enlightened the developers on his personal knowledge of the war. The actor even informed them he was a close friend with James Webb, author of "Fields of Fire," probably one of the most acclaimed fictional books on the war. Ironically, the developers were huge fans of that same book, and Astin's character in Men of Valor is named after one of the characters from the book.

"What other types of research were used in the creation of Men of Valor?
The developers also watched movies and documentaries. They learned early on that the majority of fictional films based upon the war are not very accurate, so they relied more on non-fiction documentaries, such as "Hearts and Minds," "Vietnam: The Ten Thousand Day War," and "Vietnam: A Television History" were instrumental in shaping the game. 2015 decided early on to include documentary sequences to grant the player a glimpse into the actual historical significance of the game's operations. Vivendi Universal Games, the publisher, assisted in getting actual footages and photographs from the National Archives which were assembled together into short, in-game documentaries that preface each operation. Lastly, 2015 secured the voice-over talents of actor Edward Herrmann, an accomplished actor who has done great work for scores of History Channel documentaries. Herrmann's voice-over work lends an additional level of authenticity to these sequences."
"What licensed music is in the game and how is it being used?
There are seven licensed songs in the game. The game takes place from 1965 through 1968, and the developers wanted the songs to evoke different emotions based upon the year the player is currently in. Motown songs, like James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and Wilson Pickett's "Midnight Hour" are used in the earlier missions and help capture a more innocent time period. As the game progresses and the player begins questioning his own involvement in the conflict, the developers chose other selections, like Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction", Mamas and the Papas "California Dreamin'" and The Grass Roots "Live For Today". The musical selections are used both as ambient and score; when the squad rides out into their first mission, they hear James Brown playing on the radio. In a later mission, when one of their good friends dies, "Eve of Destruction" plays over the rest of the scene, setting up the mood for the rest of the game.
